Sopore, Dec 02 (KNO): SSP Rural Traffic Kashmir, Ravinder Pal Singh on Tuesday said the traffic wing has issued nearly three lakh challans this year—generating a revenue of more than Rs 10 Crore. SSP Pal while speaking to news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said the strict enforcement of the traffic department and wider public cooperation have led to a 30-35 percent decline in accidents and fatalities in comparison to last year. With the predictions of fog and snow risks ahead, SSP advised the motorists to drive on minimal speeds, lights on, avoid mobile usage, maintain lane discipline and follow essential travel only, particularly during the mornings. In tourist areas like Gulmarg and Pahalgam, the SSP mandated fixed fare rates for taxis and Sumos. He stressed on passenger safety, vehicle fitness and adherence to speed regulations. The SSP said that the department has intensified enforcement across Sopore and other areas after repeated complaints of overloading, helmetless driving and seat belt violations. He warned that the teenagers doing stunts, rash driving or wrong cuts endangering pedestrians will face strict actions and urged that no vehicles shall be given to the person until he/she holds a license. SSP Pal said the department is running awareness drives in schools, colleges and public forums, adding that the NGOs and NCC units are being involved to promote safer behaviour on the roads. Rural pockets also report frequent violations, SSP said, adding the traffic police, district police and RTO offices have started joint drives for checks and enforcement—(KNO)
